Her tracks were clear in the fresh snow. Tobu crouched to inspect them, then sniffed the air. They led off into the forest, still dark in the early-morning gloom.

“She left us?” Jed asked.

“I thought that’s what you wanted!” Ash snapped, barely able to believe it. Another friend, another person he relied on, taken away from him.

“I meant we should keep an eye on her, not that she should head out into the wilds alone!”

To his credit, Jed looked genuinely worried, his expression strained with guilt.

“Why would she do this?” Yallah asked.

Ash thought of the strange Song Rook had been repeating.

Danger. Threat. Resist. Protect.

“She knew she was in danger,” Ash answered, his shuddering breath forming puffs of cloud. “She couldn’t fight the Devourer’s Song, no matter how hard she tried.”

And she tried so hard, Ash thought, his breath catching in his throat. He swallowed before saying, “She left to protect us from herself.”

“But how do you hide from the Devourer’s Song? Where do you go?” Teya asked, her own voice cracking.

“Somewhere it can’t reach,” Ash said, remembering the trail of footprints in his dream.

Somewhere only one other person has gone . . .

“Well? Should we follow her?” Kailen asked.

“We have no time,” Tobu said. Ash grimaced, knowing he was right. “It won’t be long before the Wardens come looking for us. With the megadon, speed is on our side, but we must push on while we can.”

As the others prepared the megadon for travel, Ash just stood in the snow, his feet turning as cold as he felt inside, staring at the footprints of the friend he’d just lost.

They were all he had left of her.

For all those years, she’d waited for Ash. Alone and forgotten in the ruins of Skybridge, the crows that haunted its heights her only company. But that hadn’t stopped her from trying to do the right thing. She’d been determined to correct her past mistakes and help Ash in any way she could.

But Ash couldn’t help her, not when she’d needed him most.

A hand touched his shoulder, pulling him out of his misery.

“She’ll be all right,” Tobu said, looking out into the forest. “She’s a survivor.”
